This time Po (Jack Black) is reunited with his long-lost father (voiced by Bryan Cranston), and they travel to a kind of panda paradise where we are introduced to all sorts of new characters designed to add juice to this threequel. It is there that Po graduates from student to teacher as he has to prepare this troupe of ill-prepared pandas to become warriors in the cause against the villainous Kai (J.K. Simmons), who has been sweeping across the Orient defeating kung fu masters. Of course the ultimate fight will be against Po, who must stop him in his tracks.

As I say in my video review (click above to watch), all the familiar elements that made the first two films in the franchise not only box office hits but also an Oscar-nominated animated feature are still there, but the underlying heart of the tale has been sweetened and given more gravitas this time. But don’t despair: the regular gang from the original are back including Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu) and Crane (David Cross), along with Po’s loving adoptive father (James Hong) and the ever-wise Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) who is still dispensing all his worldly advice. Among my favorites of the new crew is the irrepressible Mei Mei (voiced by Kate Hudson).

Direction is again first rate by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni, while the clever script is credited to Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. They have supplied numerous gags to keep the kids happy, but the film never panders (or should be say panda-ers – sorry) to just the small fry. This movie has true soul and should have wide appeal to families looking for something to warm up their lives during the cold days of February. And fortunately it also has Jack Black, whose vocal work as Po is again exceptional — matched this time by a three-dimensional turn from Cranston as his father. Overall, the Panda team has done it again, making a magical and spiritual adventure full of fight, fun and, yes, heart.

The waterlogged disaster movie “The Finest Hours” is a moderately gripping whoosh of nostalgia that shamelessly recycles the ’50s cliché of the squeaky-clean all-American hero. In this Disney movie, adapted from a book by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman and based on real events in February 1952, Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), a Coast Guard sailor based in Chatham, Mass., leads a next-to-impossible rescue mission during the most fearsome nor’easter this side of “The Perfect Storm.”

Bernie heads a party of four dispatched to save the 32-member crew of the Pendleton, an oil tanker stranded off Cape Cod. The ship has split in half, and to keep it from breaking apart completely, it has been purposely run aground on a shoal.

Modest and mild-mannered, with shining eyes, Mr. Pine persuasively embodies a comic-book archetype so hoary that you half expect him to preface sentences with “gee whiz,” “gosh” and “golly.”

This 3-D movie, directed by Craig Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl,” “Million Dollar Arm”) presents not one but two such specimens of clean-cut manly virtue. Bernie’s counterpart aboard the Pendleton, Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck), is the tanker’s chief engineer, who made the decision to strand the ship in the unlikely event that help would arrive.

Waiting on shore is Bernie’s brand-new fiancée, Miriam (Holliday Grainger), a spunky, doll-faced telephone operator who resembles a young Madonna with an extra coating of dew. Needless to say, the conspicuously weather-beaten inspirations for the characters, glimpsed in photos at the end of the movie, lack the glamour of the actors playing them.

“The Finest Hours” never departs from a tried-and-true formula, but that’s one of its quaint charms. Although set in the 1950s, it’s really an old-fashioned World War II film and a paean to the “greatest generation.” Instead of Nazis, the villain everyone can hiss at is nature on the rampage.

The crew of the Pendleton makes up the same cross section of stereotypes you’d find in a vintage war film, almost all of them speaking in exaggerated New England accents, but there is barely enough time to distinguish one from another. Because Ray is unmarried, a grouchy seaman suggests that the only reason that he’s willing to take such risks is because he has less to lose.

Unlike today’s space adventures, “The Finest Hours” doesn’t flaunt the kind of computer-generated effects that turn so many would-be blockbusters into cheesy-looking cartoons. Here the filmmakers strive for authenticity. Especially in the film’s first two-thirds, the most exciting moments conjure a genuine awe.

To reach the Pendleton, Bernie’s 36-foot boat and its crew members, one of whom is played by a sadly underused Ben Foster, must cross a sandbar onto which towering waves crash. The scenes of the vessel climbing one wall of water after another at a nearly 90-degree angle may not be believable, but they stir your adrenaline. They are the main reason to watch the film, which loses energy once the weather calms.

While watching “The Finest Hours,” I thought of a less stuffy alternate title, “Ride the Wild Surf.” That, of course, is already taken.

Fifty Shades Of Grey 2 Just Cast A Huge Star In A Key Role image
Despite less than stellar reviews, Fifty Shades of Grey still managed to make more than $500 million at the worldwide box office last year. Hell, it’s even nominated for an Academy Award (sure, it’s Best Original Song, not Best Picture or one of the big awards, but it’s still a damn Oscar nomination). Given that amount of money, and the massive global popularity of the books, sequels were inevitable, and though it took longer to come together than the studio may have liked, Fifty Shades Darker is rolling along. And the production just added a new big name to the cast in the form of Kim Basinger.

While stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are back in the lead roles of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively, Variety reports that Universal has now added Kim Basinger as the first significant new cast member to join the BDSM party. According to the trade’s sources, she will play a former lover of the titular Grey, the young, successful businessman with a dark, sexy secret at the center of the narrative.

The 62-year-old Kim Basinger will take the role of Elena Lincoln. She is both a business partner of Christian Grey as well as a former lover. Given both of those roles in his life, you can bet that the two have an interesting relationship, and that there will be some simmering sexual tension and mind games going on. She was hinted at in the first film, so her arrival on the scene is rather likely to have quite an impact on the sequel.

In addition to Basinger, Dakota Johnson, and Jamie Dornan, Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford, and Max Martini are reportedly returning for Fifty Shades Darker in their supporting roles of Elliot Grey, Kate, and Taylor.

After the first movie, there were all kinds of rumors of discord on set. There was reportedly a ton of friction between Johnson and Dornan, and director Sam Taylor-Johnson butted heads with author E.L. James, who maintained an unusual amount of control for a writer whose work was being adapted.

The search for a new director was part of why it has taken Fifty Shades Darker longer than expected to get moving, but now James Foley has been tapped to sit in the big chair. Additionally, Niall Leonard, who just so happens to be E.L. James’ husband, is the one adapting the second novel in the erotic trilogy.

Once the full cast and crew are in place, Universal plans to shoot Fifty Shades Darker, and the final chapter in the saga, Fifty Shades Freed, back-to-back.

Three films release this weekend – Hate Story 3, Angry Indian Goddesses and Kajarya. Each of these films is a women-centric affair, a rarity to have abundance of such releases on a single weekend. Between the three, the film which has been promoted most extensively is Hate Story 3. That was expected since it is one of the rare franchises to see a third in the series. First Hate Story, with Paoli Dam in the lead, was a decent success and had managed to make some profits. Hate Story 2, with Surveen Chawla as the central protagonist, was bigger in scale, and went on to cross the 25 crore mark to emerge as a Semi-Hit.

Now Hate Story 3 is even bigger and has some notable actors in there, the most known face being Sharman Joshi. However, it is the leading ladies who are the selling point in this erotic franchise and with Zareen Khan and Daisy Shah going through a complete metamorphosis, there has been good curiosity. It is pretty much a given that the film would open well in the smaller centers and interiors. Even at multiplexes, the film is getting a very wide release (8-10-12 shows) which says a lot about the way trade is positive about this franchise. The film is set for a bigger weekend than Hate Story 2

Angry Indian Goddesses is a very good film, as have been the reports from the festivals where it has been screened. The irony though is that it is actually *not* a festival film and is as commercial as it gets. Its title slots it into the offbeat zone but director Pan Nalin has actually made a fun film with fair bit of drama that is bound to catch attention of those who watch it. That said, the film has hardly been promoted, which is a pity since it deserved much better. There isn’t much expected from the opening but solid critical acclaim can allow it to hold on over the weekend. Post that, all would boil down to word of mouth.

Third release of the week, Kajarya, is a two year old film that has been traveling festivals since 2013. There has been zero promotion around the film and release is being meager as well. It would be a miracle to see the film actually find attention amongst the audience, and one waits to see the kind of critical acclaim that may comes its way.
